We're looking for a good social media intern!

Does this sound like you?

You know what Orkut is, because your own social network reaches beyond the flavor of the moment and deep into the interwebs. You don’t care that Facebook keeps your information forever, because you know that your Facebook/Myspace/Blogger/YouTube/Twitter face is your public face anyway. You talk in 140 character strings, including when you mention URLs. Your fingers are on the pulse of citizen journalism in the greater Seattle area, you can operate a camera, and you know how to connect with everyone. You’re probably tweeting about this very internship position to your network right now. Come do it for us...

Focus:
In charge of PKV’s marketing and social media presence, or at least a large facet of it. Learning about working with a small non-profit organization and a chance to really stretch your capabilities and own the marketing process.

We are looking for someone who can work at least 10 hours a week, enough time to see what’s going on in the parkour, fitness, and Seattle worlds and at PKV, then connect the stories in meaningful ways.

Responsibilities:
  • Monitor PKV’s various social media presences
  • Interact with the parkour community and the world at large
  • Keep PKV’s social media presences fresh and active with current material from the gym and from PKV projects
  • Make connections with the fitness world at large, but more importantly with local businesses, people, and organizations that share PKV’s values
Perks of the job include free access to the Parkour Visions gym and a strong voice in the marketing and communications process. Build up your resume and help support a local non-profit!

Contact eric@parkourvisions.org if you're interested!

Parkour Visions is a 501(c)3 organization based in Seattle that promotes physical fitness through parkour, the art of overcoming obstacles in our environment.

Grab your cameras and measuring tapes: let's plan a park!

The sprint is on for ParkOurPark!

We had a great conversation yesterday about the Park Proposal, with a lot of new ideas and enthusiasm from friends and volunteers. Now it’s time to put theories into action.

Our SketchUp artists are hard at work creating models of what can go into ParkOurPark. But they need pictures and measurements to get it right.

For the next three days, we need ALL OF YOU to take pictures and measure the city elements all around you:
  • bus stops
  • bike racks
  • railings
  • traffic barriers (tall ones, thick ones)
  • curbs
  • railroad ties/tracks
  • benches
  • picnic tables (long ones, octagon ones)
  • dumpster
  • scaffolding
  • stairs
  • walls
  • access ramps
  • bollards (single pole/column car stops)
  • boulders
  • telephone poles (lying on the ground)
  • lamp posts
  • playground equipment
  • random heavy things used in construction
  • par course pieces (workout stations along trails)
If you see something and wonder if it's what we're looking for, share it. The more options, the better. If it looks like it would make a good parkour training obstacle, take a picture, take some measurements, and upload it to http://drop.io/ourpark or simply email it to ourpark@drop.io

We need everything ASAP. Like, this week.

If you are a SketchUp person, let us know and we’ll get you in touch with Garrett, our project lead for modelers.

The ParkOurPark team will be meeting again at the gym at 5:00 on Saturday, May 15, to lay out the park. Come join us!

Questions? Email Beth.

Help design a Parkour Park

Know Google SketchUp? Have a camera and a tape measure? Want to see a parkour park in Seattle? We need your help.

The Seattle Design Commission is asking for projects to temporarily transform delayed building sites into something nicer. We want to send in a badass proposal for a parkour park easily built from elements the city already has - bus shelters, traffic barriers, curbs, bike racks, access ramps, benches, scaffolding, etc.

See all the places that say You? That means You. We need help. Come join us at the gym on this Sunday, May 9, at 5:00 to share your ideas, volunteer your talents, and eat some pizza.

Oh, and meet new people (like me).

We mentioned pizza, right?

Compiled new changes to the gym!

We are approaching the singularity!! :P

  • Brandee and Eric busted their ass cutting out the rest of the front roorn's flooring. From irregularly angled wall to oddly shaped wall is all smooth rubber now :) Eric even dedicated a small piece of his finger to the design... (he's healed now!)
  • Stone Gardens and Rafe just doubled our number of rock climbing holds - and they‘re mostly all big jugs!
  • Kai has built us an incredibly sexy steel weight sled - you just love to hate it...
  • Terry (Austin's dad) donated some long pipe and fittings for new extra-long precision trainers
  • Brandee has brought in our first natural environment trainer in the form of an avocado plant
  • I moved around the utility closet so we can use the windows more, and ended up adding more cubby storage and a closet<->workshop quick access bar in the process.
  • We‘ve acquired our first dolly cart and are transferring between the dedicated workshop and gym now
  • I made some quick fixes to our precision hangers to make them hold things better
  • Eric installed a new very tough pull up bar to the doorway
  • Eric and I added some shelving to the kitchen
  • Eric and Beth added an awesome extra layer of storage to the lounge closet, and I added a bar for extra bars...
  • The Bulldog concrete rotary hammer has arrived :)

Brandee is actually finishing up the second flooring as we speak, we have some amazing volunteers! Very exciting as the gym is coming together!

Compiled changes to the gym

(download)

Some great stuff got done by our volunteer corps this week, still got lots of work for the big changes though ahead.

  • The lab wall is now fully sheeted in 3/4" ACX and drastically reinforced, close to the strongest wall in the gym.
  • The windows now have our trim design with rounded over edges and feels fantastic thanks to Brandee and Rob.
  • Eric added a ladder section below the small window on the inside so we can now traverse in and out of it.
  • Ben got us a crazy heavy vault horse donated that extends higher than the Beast!
  • Janine fixed our espresso machine so we can now work even more hours ;)
  • Eric figured out how to get our first sand weighted soccer ball airtight (makes a great slamball / medicine ball).
  • Skill cards on first aid / CPR added to the med bay.
  • Workshop back to normal after last crazy build day.
  • The smaller balance beam has been reinforced and its design improved again.

Thanks to everyone who has been helping out this week (even if it was just sewing up our sandbags yet again), every bit makes this space better and better :)
