ParkOurPark on KUOW

Take a listen below or visit the page on KUOW to hear the interview. Thanks to Mr Reynolds for the nice little piece and smart questions - now if we can just get a better definition of parkour into everyone's heads ;)

As long as nothing crazy happens in the news today tune in to KUOW (NPR, 94.9) on The Conversation with Ross Reynolds to hear a quick live interview with Tyson about the ParkOurPark proposal.

PS the project page on parkourvisions.org is also up: http://parkourvisions.org/projects/parkourpark/

Parkour playground on Madison chosen as finalist in plan to activate Seattle empty spaces | CHS Capitol Hill Seattle

Not long ago, it was a rare thing to find a city park with a climbing wall. In a similar fashion, a planned Capitol Hill park could be one of the first to be built specifically for freerunners to jump and climb up curbs, over tables and across walls.

ParkOurPark,” the brainchild of local non-profit Parkour Visions, was one of the 13 finalists selected in the city-wide Holding Patterns Initiative, led by the Seattle Design Commission. SDC developed Holding Patterns in response to growing concern over the growing number of abandoned or unused lots across the city, and sent an open call out into the community for creative solutions to activate those empty spaces.

We were recently moved through to the second round of the Holding Patterns Initiative and are starting to get some press about it! It's sure to stir up some good discussions so please add your thoughts before we move to the next stage on the 20th :)

Quick update on the ParkOurPark project: we turned in the proposal to Seattle Design Commission on May 24, and we expect to hear back from them sometime next week. In the meantime, lots of you have asked to see how it turned out. So here it is - the "10,000 foot view" of what a temporary, interactive playground and training area here in Seattle could look like.

This proposal was a collaborative effort and we couldn't have done it without all the awesome people who gave up weekend and evening hours to talk, write, draw, render, photograph, jump, model, and dream:

  • Tyson
  • Beth
  • Stefan and Matt (from CAST Architecture, who worked late nights and overtime on the park rendering and layout)
  • Garrett
  • Eric
  • Beth
  • Sam
  • Garrett
  • Rafe

Together, we push Play.

Grab your cameras and measuring tapes: let's plan a park!

19madison2

The sprint is on for ParkOurPark!

We had a great conversation yesterday about the Park Proposal, with a lot of new ideas and enthusiasm from friends and volunteers. Now it’s time to put theories into action.

Our SketchUp artists are hard at work creating models of what can go into ParkOurPark. But they need pictures and measurements to get it right.

For the next three days, we need ALL OF YOU to take pictures and measure the city elements all around you:
  • bus stops
  • bike racks
  • railings
  • traffic barriers (tall ones, thick ones)
  • curbs
  • railroad ties/tracks
  • benches
  • picnic tables (long ones, octagon ones)
  • dumpster
  • scaffolding
  • stairs
  • walls
  • access ramps
  • bollards (single pole/column car stops)
  • boulders
  • telephone poles (lying on the ground)
  • lamp posts
  • playground equipment
  • random heavy things used in construction
  • par course pieces (workout stations along trails)
If you see something and wonder if it's what we're looking for, share it. The more options, the better. If it looks like it would make a good parkour training obstacle, take a picture, take some measurements, and upload it to http://drop.io/ourpark or simply email it to ourpark@drop.io

We need everything ASAP. Like, this week.

If you are a SketchUp person, let us know and we’ll get you in touch with Garrett, our project lead for modelers.

The ParkOurPark team will be meeting again at the gym at 5:00 on Saturday, May 15, to lay out the park. Come join us!

Questions? Email Beth.

Help design a Parkour Park

Know Google SketchUp? Have a camera and a tape measure? Want to see a parkour park in Seattle? We need your help.

The Seattle Design Commission is asking for projects to temporarily transform delayed building sites into something nicer. We want to send in a badass proposal for a parkour park easily built from elements the city already has - bus shelters, traffic barriers, curbs, bike racks, access ramps, benches, scaffolding, etc.

See all the places that say You? That means You. We need help. Come join us at the gym on this Sunday, May 9, at 5:00 to share your ideas, volunteer your talents, and eat some pizza.

Oh, and meet new people (like me).

We mentioned pizza, right?
